To say the last few days have been challenging would be an understatement. I fully expected on Monday morning that later in the week I would be writing a euphoric article about MMA returning to my beloved home state of New York and how sad I was to be 6500 miles away in Japan for this momentous occasion. Instead......the world got flipped, turned upside down. I still haven't recovered from the shock of a reality TV star (along with being a bigot and sexist) becoming the 45th President of the United States so I can't do euphoric. Let's get to some picks.

I won't say I got off the Conor hype train because I'm also a huge Nate Diaz fan and losing to Nate Diaz isn't something to be ashamed off and isn't a knock. Conor went into that first fight against Diaz with Hubris and thought he left hand could sleep anybody. If there is one thing he learned after that loss is that he can't go into every fight thinking he can throw the flashy, spinning shit and fought
much more methodical in the rematch where he got the win. In Alvarez, he's fighting a legit wrestler and a match-up problem for Conor since he has the ability to stay in Conor's face for five rounds, grind him and not give Conor the space he needs to operate. With that said....still picking Conor to KO him in the second because you can't be on the hype train if you're calling for a decision win. Conor by KO in 2nd.
Picking Conor- Dr. Law, Gooms, Kid P
Picking Eddie- DJ Mark
UFC Welterweight Championship

Woodley wanted a "big-money" fight and by George he got it(well kind of, it's more from the effect of being on the same card with Conor but whatever a check is a check right?). Not many people I would pick over Tyron in the 1st round. His strength and power he shows in the first round of a fight is unparalled. The problem lies if his opponent makes it to the 2nd round. His chances of winning drop precipitously (i.e. Woodley is f*cked if it gets passed the 1st). I'm banking on the crispiest shape-up in MMA getting the KO in the first five minutes. Woodley by 1st round TKO.

Both Polish, both 115lbs, both undefeated, both have sooo many consonants in their names. It's almost like a mirror-match from Street Fighter II: Championship Edition. The division has reached the point that I can't see Joanna losing to any of the current top contenders. I'm waiting on Jessica Andrade(who looks massive and like a killer since dropping down to 115) winning another fight or two and getting her shot. Joanna is the best striker in the division and Karolina is not looking to take her down which plays right into the wheelhouse of Joanna CHAMPION. Joanna by decision.
Picking Joanna- All of us
Chris Weidman vs. Yoel Romero
@kamuraobscura |
spinning kick which tipped the fight. Weidman is still top 2 in the division. While Yoel is an awesome wrestler with powerful takedowns, Weidman still is the whole package (when he can actually get to the octagon that is). Weidman by decision.
Picking Weidman- All of us
Donald Cerrone vs. Kelvin Gastelum
Just read today that Donald is a Trump supporter. Gastelum will be his toughest test at his new division. Kelvin is still young but he has shown flashes of the immense potential he has. I don't think he gets the win in this fight but it will be a learning experience for him that will serve him later on. Donald by decision
Picking Donald- All of us

The former champ versus the people's champ. Pennington has shown an ability to make a fight she should reasonably lose handily a close affair(see fight with Holly Holm). That said, Miesha should win this fight handily. Tate by decision
Picking Tate- All of us
For some reason we decided to pick every fight on this card. Doesn't mean I was going to write something for every fight. (Editor's note - B*tch, you agreed to this)
Frankie Edgar vs. Jeremy Stephens
